Error: "Missing Export KERNEL32.DLL

Symptoms of the Error

When starting Istaria, if you are running on WindowsMe or Windows98, you may receive the following error message:
"The ACE.DLL file is linked to missing export KERNEL32.DLL:setfilepointerEx"

This error will occur when using Windows98 or WindowsMe.

Cause of the Error

The problem is caused by the latest version of the client using Windows functions that were not yet implemented in older versions of Windows. Because of technical issues, a patch can not be released that solves this problem; however, there is a method of working around with a few manual steps.

These manual steps will allow you to revert your client to an older version that still works with WindowsMe and Windows98. By doing this, you will no longer received updates to the game executible which may provide performance improvements or bug fixes (however you can still download updates to game graphics by patching).

Steps to Resolving

Please follow these steps to work around the issue:

  1. Make sure you are using the latest version of the launcher and are fully up to date with all patches: https://accounts.istaria.com/helpdesk/faq/i/Ensure+All+Files+Are+Patched
  2. Download the pre-Vista client from here: http://community.istaria.com/downloads/381_istaria_client.zip
  3. Using WinZip or a similar program, uncompress the files in 381_istaria_client.zip over top of your existing game install folder (usually c:\program files\istaria or c:\program files\virtrium\istaria). *You must make sure to overwrite existing files*
  4. From your game install folder, delete istaria.exe
  5. Use the launcher to start Istaria, but do not perform a full scan or patch. If you patch, you will need to reapply the 381_istaria_client.zip files to your install.

Please note that WindowsMe and Windows98 are not supported operating systems and this work-around may not be supported in the future.
